Utah National Parks Arches & Canyonlands PDF Download

There are many books on hiking Arches & Canyonlands National Parks.

So, why did we decide to go against the big guys and write our own?

We are hikers! We saw a need for a different kind of hiking guide.

Maps and color pictures excite and provide critical information to hikers seeking just the right trail to follow. This book offers page after page of both. It answers the question…why should I choose this hike over another?  We graphically show difficulty levels, scenic value, and even offer options to choose your own prefered distance.

You won’t find this book in National Park visitor centers.

  • We submitted our book for review with the Park Service. They rejected it.
  • The primary reason was: our mileages and elevations differed from theirs.
  • We pondered this issue for quite a while.

We could copy their figures and resubmit the book or, we could stay with our own figures.

  • We collected our data for every hike with a GPS. After hiking some trails and plotting the GPS data on a map, we realized that the route on the ground and on the existing maps did not coincide. Nor did some of the distances and elevations.

So we re-hiked those trails some of them 3 times!

  • No GPS is 100% accurate. But, we decided to stay with the data we collected rather than simply copy the data already published.
  • We stand by our figures.

Ouray, Silverton & Lake City PDF Download

Ouray, Silverton & Lake City are 3 historic mining towns in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado.

Included in the guide are early season trails that have lower elevations, but most of the hikes are above timberline with trailheads starting over 9,000 feet and climbing to over 14,000 feet.

Hiking above timberline is extremely gratifying; it evokes a sense of grandeur not found in the forests or lower elevations.

Numerous hikes follow parts of the spectacular Continental Divide Trail and the Colorado Trail. Many hikes are cross country following intermittent animal and old pack trails. We included some of the most popular Colorado 14ers as well as some of the easier peaks to introduce this type of environment to some that might not otherwise experience them. But, even at these elevations, there are trails for all difficulty levels. That is the magic of hiking Ouray-Silverton-Lake City!

Telluride PDF downloadHiking Telluride Colorado is not easy; it is hiker challenging. Nestled in a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, the town of Telluride, at 8,750 feet, is surrounded by 13,000 to 14,000 foot peaks.

But, we went to Telluride. A litany of trails 11 miles long with 3,000 feet gain and up seemed to be the norm. Acclimated we may be, but at age 70, we have met our challenges in life and were looking for beauty and serenity to fulfill our wanderlust, not ten hour hiking days. We poured through the maps, conversed with locals, hiked about 400 miles of trails to produce a collection of routes fit for Jack & Jill.

Yes, easy and moderate routes do exist in Telluride, and they are thrilling.

Only 3 of the trails included in our guide book gain more than 3,000 feet in elevation. They are extremely beautiful, are relatively easy to follow, and are popular, but not considered crowded so we included them in this guide.

Hiking Crested Butte Colorado

There are so many premier hiking trails, one could not hike them all in a year. The special beauty of Crested Butte is reflected in these trails that wind through seasonal wildflowers and the largest contiguous aspen forest in the country. These trails are moderate by Colorado standards. The vistas are grand, expansive, and frequently instant. There are plenty of options ranging from easy to strenuous, short to long, however, this book is all about day hiking.
